Dan is a partner in the Chicago office of Holifield Janich Rachal Ferrera PLLC, a law firm practicing in the areas of employment, employee benefits and executive compensation law. He is nationally recognized by his clients and peers alike for his in-depth experience as well as his creative and practical skills in executive and equity compensation, employee benefits plan design and administration, and in ERISA litigation. Dan’s 30 plus years of professional experience was acquired as a benefits partner at several large corporate law firms in Chicago.

Dan’s clients are located throughout the country and include public and closely held companies, start-ups, not-for-profit organizations, and C-level executives in a variety of industries, including manufacturing, financial services, professional services, health care, and higher education.

Dan is a frequent speaker on employee benefits and executive compensation issues and has given numerous presentations at
annual conferences of bar associations and trade organizations across the country.

He is a contributing author of several high-profile legal treatises, including Employee Benefits Law and ERISA Litigation. His articles appear in professional, bar and trade journals, including The Journal of Employee Ownership Law and Finance, Workspan, Family Advocate, Solo, and Profit Sharing.

He has also co-authored numerous handbooks including Equity Compensation for Limited Liability Companies, Beyond Stock Options, Selected Issues in Stock Options, Selected Issues in Equity Compensation, Equity Compensation for Closely Held Corporations, and The Decision-Maker’s Guide to Equity Compensation.

Dan serves as a Senior Editor of Employee Benefits Law (BNA Books) and is a former Chair of the Employee Benefits Committee of the Chicago Bar Association.

He is a Fellow in the American College of Employee Benefits Counsel (ACEBC), an invitation-only prestigious law academy that recognizes the top employee benefits attorneys in the country. He currently serves as a member of its Board of Governors and as Chair of its Education Committee.

Dan has been recognized as among the top 5% of lawyers practicing employee benefits law in Illinois and was named an Illinois Super Lawyer for each year since 2007, and also has received recognition as an Illinois Leading Lawyer in Employee Benefits each year since 2013.

He is an active member of several benefits and executive compensation trade organizations, including the National Center for Employee Ownership (NCEO), where he has served as a board member, the ESOP Association and the National Association of Stock Plan Professionals (NASPP). He is also an active member of the Employee Benefits Committee of the American Bar Association (ABA) Employment Law Section, where he has served in a leadership role as Management Chair of the Reporting and Disclosure Subcommittee and currently serves as Management Chair of the Subcommittees on Specialized Retirement Plans and ERISA Preemption.

Dan has served as a member of several non-profit and university boards and is currently an advisory council member of a well known Chicago-based charitable organization that supports and promotes inner-city student advancement in private education. He is admitted to practice in Illinois, U.S. District Court, and Trial
Bar of the Northern District of Illinois, the Seventh Circuit Court of Appeals, U.S. Tax Court, and U.S. Supreme Court.

Dan earned his J.D. law degree from The John Marshall Law School in Chicago and his Master of Law in Taxation (LL.M.) degree from DePaul University College of Law.
